Psalm 27:13 “I had fainted, unless, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”

This text puts before us a future experience embraced or anticipated by faith. It indicates the sustaining power of such anticipation. The goodness of God is His kindness towards us. Concerning the goodness of God I think of several things; it is infinite; it is perfect in quality; it flows from his eternal character.

The knowledge that David had of the goodness of God came from three sources: first the manifestation that came through the creation of the world; secondly the story of His dealings with his own people Israel; and thirdly his own experience from childhood.

David’s faith and ours should rest on these things as well; the uniform character of God and His conduct toward us past and present.

As we now prepare to embrace a new year let us not faint or fear but have faith in the God who has revealed Himself to us and will sustain us in the days ahead.

Today the standard by which many are tempted to live by has been lowered. Many justify the lowering of moral standards for believers by saying they are no longer under the law. I believe that sins which contravene the law such as breaking the Ten Commandments are contrary to the sound doctrine of the gospel. In fact the moral standards of the gospel are no different than the moral standards of the law. We must not now imagine that, because we have embraced the gospel, we may now reject the law! While the law is impotent to save us and we have been released from the laws condemnation so that we are no longer under it in that sense. God did send forth his Son to die for us, and now puts His spirit with us, in order that the righteous requirement of the law may be fulfilled in us. There is not antithesis between law and gospel in moral standards which they teach, the antithesis is in the way of salvation, since the law condemns, while the gospel justifies.

For example Cain said "am I my brothers keeper?" This single attitude was reflected in his dealings with his own brother. Judas said, "what will you give me?" He proved over and over that these words summed up his life. Jesus said out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. He also said by your own words you shall be justified and by your own words you shall be condemned. Discipleship is not only reflected in the things we do but also in the way we think. No wonder the psalmist said "let the words of my mouth and the meditations of our heart be acceptable in thy sight Oh Lord for sooner or later we speak what we are to become.
